Price increase for legacy plans - Jan 1 2020
https://www.fastmail.com/help/ourser...ng-legacy.html
eg. Enhanced up to $45/yr from $40. If you renew by month end you can still get 3 yrs for $100. |
I was totally confused, both perlsonal lite and family lite are 15 USD per year, but the family one supports own domains. how to differ them?

I'm not seeing any multi-year renewal option at all. I wonder why that is?
I currently have one domain (MX records only pointed to Fastmail), one master, one enhanced, one full and two lite accounts, one of which is not being used. One of the latter was originally a full account and a might-as-well set-up when I passed on a laptop to my sister for her to give Fastmail a try. I won't carry a $50/yr mailbox on the off-chance she'll get around to it. As for the extra storage "bargain" it's not a bargain if you are not using it and don't need it. Some of us archive off old email periodically. So, it's effectively a significant increase to regain CalDAV and CardDAV sync capability for lite and full accounts. I think I now understand why a former colleague whose family I set up withe Fastmail accounts emailed to let people know his new email address was an @fastmail one, effectively announcing he was giving up using their domain name. The premium for continuing was too much for him. Simplifying the service catalogue is great, but doing it in a way that breaks faith with long-time customers is not, and of course the whole point of my advocacy for domain ownership was to provide a degree of protection from price gouging, business continuity and other failures. Unless I've missed it, the lack of direct communication from Fastmail (and yes, I'm signed up to "chatty" emails) is disappointing and not a great look for a company with the employee-owned company ethos, one that won't resell your data, will answer email, provide help from an actual human etc. |

Today the billing screen in my account still shows 3yr renewal for $100. Mailbox / Folders screen still shows 15GB. Supposedly Enhanced is to get bumped to 30GB, according to the linked page above. |
Ahhhhhhhhh we have to pay stupid GST that is $10
Not sure what I will do, I am currently in the middle of winding down my own domain, what a job I am up to about 270 people who I had to advised about the change of email addresses. I still have my wife's to finish off.....sigh, sometimes I wish I had never started but its toooooooo late now. |
Good luck Terry -- I hope it works out ok!!

But, I am also curious about the 15 -> 30GB increase. Maybe that won't go into effect until January 1st as well..? |

This is absolutely bad news.
"As one of our long term account holders, we thank you for allowing us to manage your email over the years."... They thank us by increasing the price. hahahah, pathetic. Also, they state: "In recognition of your long period of service with us, we are providing a significant discount over the current plan pricing. Your price will be adjusted to $45 USD (plus tax if it's applicable in your region)." (enphasis mine).. The standard plan is 50usd/year, we'll be paying 45usd/year, so it's a 5usd/year discount. They say that is a SIGNIFICANT DISCOUNT. They are increasing our price from 40 to 45 usd/year, a 5usd/year price increase. If -5usd/year is a significant discount, then surely +5usd/year is a significant price increase. TLDR: They are significantly increasing the price. I will be looking for alternatives. Any suggestions? |

...but isn't it still one of the cheapest (paid for) deals around? When was the last price hike? I moved from the old "Enhanced" one to the new "Standard" one a couple of years ago and can't remember the old pricing. |
A lot of paid alternatives are around the same price. You can spend less by getting less, which might be all you need. I would suggest we can't really recommend alternatives without knowing your requirements, but you will find it difficult to spend less while retaining most of the features of FM.
