FM POP Settings for Samsung mobile
I am getting constant messages from my mobile saying
"trying to reconnect to server" everytime I want to check mail or send mail using a simple FastMail POP account. All other web connections work OK from the phone. Everything works except FM. Where am I going wrong in my settings please? Incoming pop3fastmail.com Port 110 Security: none Never delete emails from server Outgoing: SMTP server: IMAP.fastmail.com Port 993. Require signin: No Any help greatly appreciated! . |
The first obvious issue is that you are specifying no security and incorrect server names.
For POP3, you should use SSL and port 995. Also the server name should be pop.fastmail.com or mail.messagingengine.com. If you use pop.fastmail.com (recommended) ensure that you have created an application password for use on your phone. The account master password will not work. For SMTP use smtp.fastmail.com or mail.messagingengine.com with SSL and port 465. |
many thanks BritTim.
The outgoing settings were saved without a problem. But the incoming seetings returned a message saying "unable to connect with email server to verify your account information no response from server" When I used pop.fastmail.com I got "unable to set up account, authentification failed" What was meant by "ensure that you have created an application password for use on your phone?" Where do I set that? - via thefastmail app? Thanks |
For App passwords, see https://www.fastmail.com/help/clients/apppassword.html

Sorry to sound stupid, but I am using the fastmail app (I checked via Google images).
I clicked your link and it said: "Why do I not need an app password for the FastMail app? An app password cannot be used to log in on the web or the FastMail app" So I'm back to where I started. My phone won't allow me to change pop3.fastmail.com to pop.fastmail.com nor mail messaging engine.com "authentication failed". |
If you downloaded the Fastmail app from Google Play, you would not be asking about POP and SMTP settings. The Fastmail app wraps the web browser, and does not require that kind of setup. You are, I think, trying to configure the standard Android mail app on Samsung.
If you were trying to use mail.messagingengine.com with SSL and port 995, I am puzzled as to why you had a problem, not that I recommend use of the old server. |

Sincere thanks to BritTim for the advice.
I now realise that I had been trying to configure the FM "wrap" by changing the settings on the Samsung's generic email client not realising they were not connected in any way to each other. How is the average punter supposed to know the difference between an 'app' and a 'wrap' when even FM call it an app? (The icon on my phone was the FM logo with the envelope, so I thought it was an app. How does one configure web access for this? I wasn't getting the reconnection messages on my mobile when visiting any other web site.) Anyway I don't care now as I used the settings described by FM for Gmail at: https://www.fastmail.com/help/client...oid.html#email Now all works perfectly (I think it's the Gmail email app with a solid red banner at top of the screen). The phone has stopped the continuous 'reconecting to server' messages. . |
