photos in signatures
hi,
i am wanting to put a simple banner photo in my email signatures sent from webmail but have not had any success. i could either keep the image locally or have it pull from a website. i like using plain text emails and wonder if there is a way to do this keeping in plain text. any help? thanks. |
1. You can't really include an image in your signature without making your email HTML. You can attach images without using HTML, but then you really have no control over how (or if) those images are displayed. So if you like plaintext (and I personally applaud you for being a responsible netizen and using plaintext and not HTML), then you really can't do this.
2. The other questions you ask are basically moot, but if you really wanted to make your messages HTML from now on, you could just attach the file to every email and include it in your sig or you could put it somewhere universally accessible (like at a web address) and put the address of the image in HTML in your sig something like <img href="http://www.place.net/myimage.jpg" />. I do not believe that FM's webmail interface would let you do the first option (and that's probably a good thing), but I'm sure you could use the second one if you have a place to host the image (and I might not use FM's file storage for this task if you're sending messages with this image url in them to a lot of people -- you could end up using a lot of your bandwidth quota depending on what kind of volume of mail we're talking about). |

thanks for your suggestion. i figured there was no way to do this in plain text. so i've been flirting around with html for some of my message. the problem is that the html editor is changing the basic code into this (below): <pre><br /> <br /> <img src="http://graphics10.nytimes.com/images...9x64.gif" /> i can insert the code in the raw view but that seems annoying. anyway to keep the html editor from doing this? -m <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" /> <title><No Subject></title> </head> <body dir="ltr"> mi <pre><br /> <br /> <img src="http://graphics10.nytimes.com/images...9x64.gif" /> </body> </html> |

As mentioned here (see the last sentence of the post), the best way is to use the notepad. I don't have any signatures defined for my personalities, but have several as quick-notes on notepad, with both text and html versions. When using the Xinha html editor, after writing my message, I click on the 'toggle html source' button (last button on the xinha toolbar) and append a quick-note with the html code. This also works to include a link to a signature image.

I assume when you create an HTML message, your signature will be treated as texts, not as a code. The result is the HTML editor codes your code, which is why those characters were converted into HTML entities.

Hey, I was wondering about this as well....
I tried the Notepad & Quick Note, within html mode and it seems to work... would be nice IF we could specify a Signature is to be treated as Simple Text or as HTML code... Now this belongs in the feature request section if its not already there. :) |

This site can be used to create plain text signatures that contain images, but it's probably not what you want! :D

That only really works IF you know html.
Using the Notepad function of thge Webmail ibterface works great for it compose msg in HTML or text then switch to html mode and insert that Note. it seems to work. |

Updates: workaround and suggestions for a simple fix
I contacted FM and their suggested workaround is to create a template page with signature and banner, storing it in the Templates folder.
This works fine EXCEPT that it will not work when replying to messages from others. It only works if you initiate a thread, and even then your signature & banner will only appear in your first email. A simple but cumbersome workaround is to copy and paste the desired signature/ banner from the corresponding Template. When replying a bunch of emails, it does get tedious. A feasible simple solution would be to have FM include a couple buttons/ icons on the compose page; by clicking on an icon a corresponding signature/ banner would get pasted in at the cursor.
