why go with a smaller email provider
 

Hi,

What are some reasons to go with a smaller email carrier like a runbox or fastmail over gmail or outlook (or something else)?


Also if I did use a email dedicated company what would be the best option for online replacements for docs or office?

I would rephrase the question: reasons to go with a paid email provider. As it happens both runbox and fastmail are small and paid...

Definitely you get a better support, by submitting tickets to support teams, instead of just posting questions/problems on a bulletin board. There are some "extras" offered by some smaller providers, like simple webhosting, domain management, aliases, personalties &c. Admittedly some "big boys" offer some of those too.

If all you want is a plain email address, with a lot of storage space, for personal use, certainty (in practical terms) that the provider will not disappear in a few years' time, Google or Outlook is for you.

I can't ever make up my mind on what to use honestly. I probably have 10 threads over the past half dozen years on here looking for advice.

I don't mind paying for a service if it's good. I have used both gmail and outlook. Both work. I like having my office suite options with them and generally that's the main reason why I stick with them however I don't love either's email interface. Gmail is ugly and over complicated in my opinion. Outlook is nicer but glitch filled. I have used both fastmail and runbox. They both do email very well. It's the added bells and whistles that I miss. Is there an online suite that's independent of google and microsoft? Also I use a domain and use 3 alias' but all within the same account/inbox.

Any advice? Probably stick with one of the 2 big guys?

What is the attraction of online docs for you?

Personally, I've dabbled with Google Docs and Spreadsheets but much prefer a local office suite - I use LibreOffice on all my Windows and Linux computers.

Well suited to my needs, but maybe not for everyone.

I have (and cannot see) no use for an office suite on my smartphone as I have access to my computers (home and work) most of the time.

I bounce between 2 laptops and a tablet at different locations so the convenience of having a cloud based option for word processing and spreadsheets is convenient. Nothing I do is heavy duty.

I have various documents/spreadsheets saved in file storage in my FastMail account, that I can access and update as and when required.

And like you, nothing heavy duty.

Not as smooth as, say, using Google Docs/Spreadsheets, but it works for me.

As for the tablet, I have an old Nexus 10 that I use from time to time, but with my laptop also available I have no need for an office suite on it.

Cloud based office suite makes the same version of each document available on any device. There are other ways of achieving the same result, somewhat more awkward IMHO.

This OX hosting looks interesting. Have you used it?

I've tried OX with both Namecheap and mailbox.org, but didn't like the offering.

Has anyone tried Amazon Work Mail??

WPS solves my office suite predicament. It's multi-platform and can be online or a download. Really nice actually.

what is WPS? I don't think I have heard that.

I have been using a OX hosting from Vodafone mail.
but I didn't like this offering too.
