Comments on sdf.lonestar.org
 

Hi,

I am thinking of signing up for an arpa account with "http://sdf.lonestar.org/". Are there lot of users of that system here? What are people's general comments on that system? Is ther e a noticeable difference in speed in upgrading to the arpa account?

This may sound dumb, but how do you 'telnet' to something?

On Windows:
Start -> Run -> telnet sdf.lonestar.org

you don't want to use the standard telnet on any windows < w2k - because the vt100 emulation is the worst in the world.

Get a good free/shareware ssh/telnet client - there is a java one too which is quite cool.

Do you have a link to this java client? I am interested in good telnet client myself. BTW kchess, the "software" section under http://sdf.lonestar.og/ also mentions some good telnet clients.

IMO PuTTY is the best telnet/ssh client around.

In regards to sdf.lonestar.org , i had an account on
the system for a while, and found it to be pretty good. Very limited system functions, but thats the nature of all public services these days due to one too many malicious users around. A little slow, because i was telneting to it from Australia... but still good.

Although my personal opinion is that if you really need a shell account, you should install linux... and be happy :)

I don't have an account, but isn't it the case that with an arpa account you use a better server than sdf.lonestar.org

I love that they are using SQUIRREL MAIL for email but it wants me to verify my account with paypal. I DONT HAVE PAYPAL!!

I emailed them and asked if they would approve my account.... I love squirrel mail and I would LOVE being able to use it!!

Im not a spammer and I hope they will just let me use my account w/o having to verify it!! (The fact that I emailed them back should be proof I am OK (Not a spammer))

I have recently downloaded PuTTY as a possible way to log into my NAS (I have been using FileZilla FTP Client to upload files, as I find it a miles better way to upload files than Windows Explorer (failed transfers don't stop the transfer process, and if there are any you can just transfer them back into the queue and try again), but for some reason it stopped working), and I was impressed by the fact that the maintainer is Simon Tatham, of Puzzle Pack fame! :) (I use his Puzzle Pack on all three of my devices.)

I have PayPal, but have found the hard way that there is a limit (just under £2000) on how much money one can receive in a year, which they don't tell you about until you exceed it (in my case it was a legacy payment of £5500), and if you do they lock your account and ask you to "confirm" it. :rolleyes: The trouble is, their confirmation form doesn't work (it has something about "building number" which doesn't apply to British (perhaps European) addresses, so I don't have anything to put there, but isn't an optional field, so I can't leave it blank either. A classic Catch-22). :eek:

And yet my standard bank account has received a payment ten times the size with no problems. :rolleyes:

Hence, I would advise everyone to steer well clear of PayPal, or if you must use it, to do so only where there is absolutely no other way of making a payment.
