G Suite’s Gmail is already not used as input for ads personalization, and Google has decided to follow suit later this year in our free consumer Gmail service. Consumer Gmail content will not be used or scanned for any ads personalization after this change.

But im sure they will continue to read ppls email......

Exactly, the geeks at Gmail read all 3-4 billion emails sent per month. Every last one of them :confused:

Google has smartly determined that scanning content you receive isn't nearly as valuable as the content you create or search for.

I continue to be underwhelmed by the "targeted" ads I am supposed to be seeing. I just now randomly grabbed a website from my bookmarks, opened it in Chrome on my phone, and instead of my usual practice (I usually ignore the worthless ads) looked for the first ad that showed up. It was for Fannie Mae (mortgages). I don't own a home. Don't have a mortgage. Have no intention of purchasing a home anytime in the near future, and can't recall having searched real estate listings or anything like that recently. Was that a targeted ad? I have no idea, but it is typical of what I see. One of the most infuriating things I find on the Internet is that some news aggregators (like Google and Bing) seem to pitch me a lot of rightwingnut news stories, presumably because I am old, white, and male, yet I am a liberal through and through and refuse to read that junk! Another example. I was at a large shopping center and wanted to eat lunch, so I searched for food via Google Maps. For some reason Maps wanted me to leave the shopping center and travel to other parts of town for lunch, and didn't list many of the restaurants I could see as I sat in my car. I ended up choosing one nearby that I could see, but was not listed by Google. Shorter me--someone is wasting a lot of money paying Google for "targeted" advertising.

Further me. I continue to find the uproar over "privacy" rather strange, at least with regards to Google and Gmail. Yes, Google is mining our online activities to target advertising more precisely, but is that really a bad thing? If I turn off most of Google's tracking via the settings I see horrible scam ads for dental implants, weight loss products, and strange clickbait promos. If instead I let Google do its thing by not turning off all the privacy options I occasionally see an ad for something I have searched for or researched on the web, but I still often see the scammy stuff. So, for what some call a loss of "privacy" I get to somewhat reduce the schlock I see when using the Internet, though it isn't perfect. In exchange, I get all sorts of wonderfully useful services like Drive, Photos, Gmail, Keep, Maps, etc. Not seeing the outrage.
