Fastmail Support filed a bug report with their engineers

Fastmail Support escalated my ticket to their senior agents. They were able to reproduce the problem and filed a bug report with their engineers "so this can investigated further and addressed."

I still don't know what the cause was but I have (thanks to the Plusnet community forum) fixed the problem by altering the size of a window in normal view; now Exposé works properly again.
