I would say that validating e-mail that is spam with a trusted mechanism is more harmful than reducing the amount of e-mail that is unmarked but is spam.

I would rather no authentication mechanism...

In Firefox, when you press Control+Enter in the compose screen to send it displays the Do you want to send confirmation, but Firefox also brings up it's download window. It is very annoying behavior...
