Bingo! I did not have any calendar view checked - now have "all calendars" checked and events are now showing. Obviously "my bad".
However, events displayed on the calendar are nearly invisible due to the dark blue (or purple) letters on a very dark grey background. Nearly impossible to see. Went to "Settings" but do not see any way to change colors or font for calendar. See here ->
