The official advice is (my emphasis)
Incoming (IMAP) server: imap.gmx.com
Port (Incoming server): 993
Incoming server requires SSL: Yes (check box)
Outgoing (SMTP) server
:smtp.gmx.com
Port (outgoing server): 587
Outgoing Server requires SSL:
No (uncheck)
