I would rephrase the question: reasons to go with a paid email provider. As it happens both runbox and fastmail are small and paid...

Definitely you get a better support, by submitting tickets to support teams, instead of just posting questions/problems on a bulletin board. There are some "extras" offered by some smaller providers, like simple webhosting, domain management, aliases, personalties &c. Admittedly some "big boys" offer some of those too.

If all you want is a plain email address, with a lot of storage space, for personal use, certainty (in practical terms) that the provider will not disappear in a few years' time, Google or Outlook is for you.
