I believe there's been jumps from higher altitudes, but they weren't entirely free fall. Also, if I remember well, Baumgartner was the first to break the sound barrier.

I'm not really a fan of the energy drink that sponsored this, but credit where credit is due: what Baumgartner accomplished here is amazing. There is a documentary that was on Belgian TV a while ago (it may be online somewhere floating around) showing the preparation for the jump ; Baumgartner trained for a really long time before attempting the jump. What he accomplished, was amazing, and other than the ego boost and record, he also brought a lot of scientific data so it was a quite scientifically useful jump too. Not just about breaking records.
