You can make the Compose screen editing width visibly wider using the CTL+ key combination (Control and + key held down together) in most browsers. CTL- unzooms, and CTL0 (CTL and the zero key together) resets the zoom to default. This just zooms everything on the screen, and doesn't change the number of characters which can be displayed on a line. That depends on the font, text size choice, and in some cases whether the characters are bold.
