Well, of course the Edit as New feature is intended for editing the previous message in compose mode, and if you don't have a mechanical keyboard this pops up the onscreen keyboard on the iPad. To remove the keyboard just touch the keyboard hide button in the lower right corner of the display.

You can also do the opposite (view an individual message plain text content).
  • Set Settings>Mail>Preferences>Writing>Message format to Plain text and be sure that the adjacent checkbox is not selected.
  • Then forward or reply to a message and you will see the plain text content.
After reading the contents of the message, be sure to Discard the message in the compose screen in either case so a spurious email is not sent!
