According to the help system for folders:

That says nothing about the time the message was
sent or
received. It says "
after they have been in the folder for a certain amount of time", which is very clear to me. I have always interpreted this just as it is written, so that I expect the action of moving a message into an auto-purge folder starting the timer.
When you add the auto-purge property to a folder, the user interface clearly states that only
unpinned messages are deleted.
I have created a folder with a 14 day auto-purge property. I moved messages received in 2005 into that folder. They are not immediately purged. I will wait a couple of days and see if the are still there. My guess is that the will be there for 14 days after they were moved to that folder.
