The big players certainly present a larger target, but on the other hand they also have much more robust security. With the smaller outfits we will never know what goes on unless something really drastic occurs, like the DDOS attacks we have seen on Fastmail or ProtonMail, or the apparent destruction of VFEmail. People want to trust the small, friendly provider, but in reality the cold behemoth is probably much more secure. Still, for the vast majority of companies I suspect your email is probably safe enough. The real security problem is us! Everyone likes to think that he/she is far superior to everyone else when it comes to detecting phishing and other hacking attempts, but we are all vulnerable. In my experience, the big ones, especially Gmail and Outlook.com, are far superior in filtering out most of the spam and dangerous email.
