Personally, I only download and delete email that I am very unlikely to want to refer to in the future. The archived copy is just insurance. I accept that, if I ever want to restore the messages to FastMail or elsewhere, this is going to involve some effort.
Clearly, if you envisage periodically restoring your archived emails, you would prefer something easier.
