Just some ideas, as I've never encountered this problem with Gmail before.
On your previous computer (do you still have it?) did you notice a problem with Gmail on that computer?
On your current computer, have you tried multiple browsers to see if the problem replicates on webmail?
Do you have a local mail client on your computer, if so does that show a discrepancy?
Does the mail client on your 'phone show the discrepancy?
If you use webmail on your 'phone, does that show the discrepancy?
