You can buy your own domain for around $10 per year. Hosting of your email can be done for free if you like, at Windows Live Domains for example (Google Apps is no longer available for free except for existing accounts).
I look at it as cheap insurance. If I become dissatisfied with my email provider, I can switch to another one, while keeping every email address the same because I own the domain at which the addresses exist. Or I can even experiment with different providers to see which one is best.
