IMAP and sending email

The latest post in Runbox blog says
Quote:
Another of the key differences between POP and IMAP is that with IMAP mail that is sent from a device is usually copied to the Sent folder on the server
This got me confused.... IMAP is not for sending messages. is it? That's what SMTP is for... How can IMAP influence where sent messages are stored?

Can anybody enlighten me. please?
