With regard to Gmail and privacy, why is it that some trust smaller providers more than Gmail? I understand that some providers claim that your emails are not being scanned for targeted advertising, etc., but how do you really know? I suspect most email providers stick to their word and do what they say, but you have no guarantee of that, and what happens when they have a disgruntled employee or they sell off to someone else? Having only a couple of people or a small staff does not mean that you are safer than having your email stored with a giant company that has entire teams dedicated to security with strict protocols and also many millions of other email users watching out. I'm personally more worried about having my email hacked by some criminal than I am by having my email scanned for advertising purposes. The other thing is reliability. I have found Gmail to be much more reliable than smaller providers that seem to suffer from outages on a fairly regular basis.
