There are two ways the email client can access gmail.
IMAP (with opt label extensions). I don't think that lets on that you're using Android. This should just require email and password to set up.
The HTTP protocol whose name I forget. The Gmail app uses this. HTTP supplies OS and HTML identification. This will open a browser with the standard Google login.
