Forcing it should not be necessary. But, it is not silly to provide it, as some people may feel that it is essential account safety. A subjective judgement about what is sensitive or not, is not relevant then.

I see no reason to force it. But I am curious about the connection problems you suggest there may be; can you share some examples? Actually, in the future browsers will complain when sites are not https-protected.
