Time notation inconsistency

Using the webinterface, why do I see the time of a message as "16:36" in the message list, and as '4:36 PM" when I open the message?

Why is this implemented in such an inconsistent way?

Interesting question. i hadn't noticed until you mentioned. The only reason I can think of is that "22:00" takes up less space in the column on the message list than "10:00 PM" would. Space is less at a premium in the message itself.

It's still inconsistent though.
