Was it phony???
Well, it just struck me that at least the last part of that story must have been made up. AFAIK (and I know too little, so correct me if I am wrong), the timeout is the time my server is going to wait for a ping kind of request to go to the server and *come back*. So, if the timeout was 3 millisecond and all things happened via the straight line route+, only a server within 3 millilightseconds/2 , which would be less than 250 miles.
Oooops, so if the default timeout was 3 milliseconds, servers beyond 250 miles should have definitely failed. I think the default timeout ought to have been at least 7 to 9 milliseconds for the error he describes to have happened.
