FastMail.fm is a great name for an email service. Fast is a desirable feature, and is an aim of the service. The .fm - the first two letters of Fast and Mail - is cool and a bit different but logical and easy to remember.

OperaMail on the other hand - sung drama mail - doesn't conjure up anything much related to an email service.

Well, then, perhaps they could at least make Opera.fm one of the alternate addresses.

Well yes and a Big No!!!

FM said over phone comes out as SM which is not so cool always.

F and S is very hard to hear difference over noisy Mobile phones.

I tested this on a female friend and she told me.
"You have to say Sierra or Foxtrot so I know if it is SM or FM"

Only if you typically are recommending SM.

For me there's no ambiguity.

Maybe invest in a good phone, too.

Why not buy out Fastmail.com (domain name)?

I hadn't rung up Fastmail.com in a while. Just redirects to Fastweb.com, which has nothing (nada, zero, zilch, nichts) to do with email (it's a scholarship search provider). I'm sure uber-rich (or perhaps suddenly not) Opera could convince Fastweb to give up the non-sensical domain, no?

that association is something your ISP is doing for (to) you. Fastmail.com does nothing at all here. It used to be an email provider.

Ohhh, it makes a diff if you enter www.fastmail.com vs fastmail.com (they need someone to help them set up decent DNS )

I add my vote for opera.fm and operamail.fm to be added to the FM domain portfolio.

Also, if Opera have (or get) an Italian presence they could get some cool domains such as fastmail.it and send.it.

It sure would be nice after all these years to get fastmail.com. Maybe it is possible now being backed by Opera? I remember Rob saying that it just wasn't worth the $ that was being asked for fastmail.com.

Although, with a lot of users owning their own domains, it's hard to imagine a lot of money being spent on yet another domain, since they already have so many to utilize.

Or even a nice, short "fm.com."

Opera is the brand they are trying to expand. I doubt they'd spend too much expanding the fastmail brand... From a business p.o.v. that is...

short and sweet but as anything that sound or look nice it is already taken.

Was fastmail.net among the Guest accounts or not?
Maybe I should have been more patient and tried again and again?

Now I have myfastmail.com a bit long.

Are free accounts allowed to change the domain?

operamejl.se and fastmejl.se are both available ... with the merger, FM might get interested in picking up more names using country TLDs. The cost is very small for not-currently-registered names. They are more reluctant when they have to pay a squatter's ransom. (I remember them asking here a few years ago about the interest in some new domain name which they would have to buy, not just register.)

No, only paid accounts can change domains upon renewals. They can also configure aliases in multiple different domains, although the number varies depending on the account type.

If at all Opera wants to change the name, they should buy "fastmail.com" and make it the primary domain.

I beleive that will have much better brand value to the fastmail name and opera

Agree! .com is definitely the better domain, because I lot of people often say: "What? .fm?" when you tell them your email address. I personally don't mind .fm, but it's just better for these purposes. But I don't believe that fastmail.com would be cheap to buy, that's if they are willing to sell.
