Yahoo Mail enables free POP3/SMTP service

Yahoo Mai has quietly enabled free POP3/SMTP for US users.

This is good news. I wonder if the POP3 activation is truly universal, or only enabled for certain U.S. accounts but not other U.S. accounts (for whatever reason)?

Could this POP access be a precursor to Yahoo Mail also enabling IMAP access to all clients (instead of only select clients such as Zimbra Desktop and some mobile phones)? Perhaps because some 3rd-parties are already reverse engineering Yahoo's IMAP access authentication?

I checked a Yahoo account I have and got the error "[sys/perm] pop not enabled for user."

I then went to the webmail to enable POP access, but Options, POP/Forwarding just takes me to a page offering to sell me Yahoo Mail Plus.

So, at least for the account I checked, free POP3/SMTP has NOT been enabled.

Hmmm... Now if only they'd offer an SSL connection throughout the webmail session (a la Gmail and FM).

I am using Rocketmail and I don't have any option for POP.

Yahoo mail is pretty good... (On the older style)

Now all they have to do is add SSL and they will be as good as fastmail

If you mean you can't access the settings in the Yahoo interface, as found in this post, you can try this link provided by kaptitsky after you sign in to your account. At least, it worked for me and my ymail account.

20% -- 2 out of 10 -- of my Yahoo.com accounts now seem to have POP3 enabled.

The other 80% still give errors.

I get this message when I clicked the link.

The service you are requesting is not currently for sale.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

Hmmm... It works fine for me as long as I'm signed in to my Ymail account. Perhaps it's specific to that domain for some reason.

Also, as a test, I signed up for a regular yahoo.com account and tried to access the pop/fwd settings page and got the same error you noted. And it's on the "Premium Services" page, so I suppose that's Yahoo's way of saying those settings are still part of Yahoo Mail Plus only (at this time). Well, this shows that, whatever U.S. Yahoo's doing with POP access, it's not automatically giving it to new accounts.

ymail.com and y7mail.com both seems to allow pop for Sweden?

Or maybe it is because I pretend to be from Australia but living in Sweden?

It is ONLY Yahoo.com addresses that do not include free POP3 access.

Just to note, .com is not a US domain, it is an international domain.

Ymail.com and Y7mail.com have always allowed POP3 access anywhere in the world.

At this point (Saturday) the 80% of my Yahoo.com addresses that did not support POP3 access on Tuesday STILL do not support POP3 access, and there has been no secondary verification that Yahoo intends to open up POP3 to all Yahoo.com addresses.

We shall see, eh?

My yahoo.com accounts still do not have access to pop.
They have an option to select pop and forwarding which I never noticed before but when you click it you are asked to upgrade to mail plus.

I also have a few ymail.com accounts with no pop access and I have some with pop access. I don't think ymail.com or rocketmail.com allow pop access to all accounts. At least not in my case.

According to this post

http://picobit.wordpress.com/2009/04...ee-pop-access/

you can enable POP3 access for a Yahoo.com mail account by setting the Content to Yahoo Asia.

Worked for me.

========

Yahoo UK content also worked for me. Turns out that was what I had the two that worked set to. I got 7 of the other 8 working; the last seems recalcitrant for some reason.

I was wondering if that was the case. If POP was being enabled on .com accounts for users in countries that already allowed POP.

None of this applies to me. I have a .ca account.
