Major Thunderbird issue
When I send emails using Thunderbird (v1.0), they often (but not always) fail to copy into the IMAP Sent Items folder. The progress box appears, but the email never actually gets copied.
Other people seem to be having similar problems on the Thunderbird forums. There is a lengthy thread here But no one over there seems to have a solution which works (although they have a partial solution for people who are only having trouble with sent emails which have Word attachments). I'm a full fastmail member. My settings are: Server port: 993 Use SSL Outgoing SMTP port: 465 Use SSL This problem is driving me up the wall. Sometimes it works, but often it doesn't. Does anyone have any ideas? |

I've been using FastMail with Thunderbird (and before that with the full Mozilla suite) for a long time, and the only times I've had trouble with saving sent messages are when there have been general connection troubles with FastMail. That said, I realise that other people do have problems; each person's mileage may vary!
Anyway, do you have your settings something like in this post I wrote? They seem to work for me, which is the only reason I point to them. (I do use FastMail as my SMTP server, but I doubt that's relevant as SMTP uses a separate connection; I'm open to correction as to a possible link, though!) |

I will tell you what I did if you promise not to laugh.
1) I made an alias called bccmyname@fastmail.com. 2) I told Thunderbird to always blind copy to that address. 3) Used a sieve script to copy any mail to this alias to the Sent Items folder. |

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually tried that a couple of days ago. I defined a rule but it doesn't seem to work.
I suspect that it might be because the preset menu options in the 'define rules' screen only allow for the creation a rule for "To/CC" (but not BCC). I haven't written a custom script before. How did you do it? |

You don’t need to write a custom script.  Just use the test for “Envelope”.

I tried 100 messages on Fastmail and 100 messages on Fusemail. 13 of the 100 messages failed to get copied to my Sent Items folder on FastMail. All messages were copied correctly to my Sent Items Folder on my FuseMail account.
This leads me to beleive that it is a problem with FastMail. Anyone have any suggestions? |

I've been using both Thunderbird and Fastmail for quite some time and don't have any problem getting emails copied to the sent items folder.

I myself have never had a problem with Thunderbird sending copies of outgoing e-mail to my FastMail "Sent" folder. On the other hand, when connecting to another mail server I use that is much slower I *do* have problems. At least 50% of the time.

Here is the log file after a failure. It does not look to me as though it even tried to copy the mail to the sent-items folder.
When it works there are some lines in the log that look like this. ======================== 2204[2f28cb0]: 2f1f9a0:imaps.proxy.fastmail.fm:A:SendData: 2204[2f28cb0]: Hi weaver4,
I don't have the same problem but I suggest you munge the email addresses that appear in the Tb log before they get harvested by spammers. |

They are munged (percent-encoded). The ones that aren't percent-encoded are Message-IDs, not addresses (and won't be harved either, since they aren't mailto: links.)

Yeah - me too!
I'm glad to see someone else mention this. I emailed support about it some time ago but they hadn't heard of it.
The mail always seems to be sent properly - it is the "copying message to sent folder" that never completes. I haven't been able to figure out a pattern for when it happens. It seems to rarely happen after restarting thunderbird. Retrying sometimes works. I'm using the latest release version of thunderbird. For server settings, I have "use SSL" selected for both IMAP and SMTP and am using mail.messagingengine.com as my SMTP server. Damn, this has a very annoying problem. Maybe we can track down what's happening. I have a very large Sent folder that it's copying to - does everone else who is having the problem? Leo |

Me too ..
I connect from Phoenix, have tried SSL and regular connection and get this problem every and now then too.
It appears to send properly every time though. Sometimes while it is trying to copy to the sent folder, I will receive the autoreply message from the addressee .. a nice confirmation it was sent. Rob. |

My sent items and trash folders are huge .. about 75 MB each, at over 1000 messages per folder.
Others in the same boat? |
