When did setting up a sending identify get so unbelievably complicated
Hi,
I just tried to setup a sending identity for an existing alias in my account, but it is insisting it is external email address and that I need an app-specific password for it. Has anyone else encountered this? ...I have raised a support ticket. |

OK, got it.
That alias was pointing to an external address. When I changed it to point to my own fastmail account the problem went away. ...I wish it had just told me that in the first place. |

It looks like a new limitation.
I have several identities created in the past with external addresses. They just send with an external address in the From header (as defined in RFC 822 and later RFCs that updated it: the From header identifies the author, not the sender and not the sending device). It was already crippled a bit in the past when the ability to define in an identity a separate "envelope-from" address (that would appear in the return path header) was removed. Now it seems that creating an identity with an external address requires providing an SMTP server that would handle sending email for the external address. So it seems I really need to hold tight to my existing identities because it seems I would not be able to recreate them. |
