Runbox and Spark mail app
A tip for anyone interested in SPARK Mail App, the award winning new client from Readdle. FWIW, it's the only one yet that inspires me to move away from Apple Mail and it's "free" for macOS and iOS as Readdle hopes to promote its other products.
After encountering problems connecting to Runbox [other mail services like iCloud and Gmail had no issues] SPARK support and I discovered an problem with AVAST Anti Virus Mail Shield. In order to connect to Runbox, I had to change the default Mail Shield settings to skip "Enable IPv6" and "Scan secured connections". Mail shield still scans headers and attachments for potential problems. Adding mail.runbox.com to the list of exempt IMAP servers was insufficient; occasionally a connection could be established while other attempts timed-out. I'm not connected in any way with Spark or Readdle except as a user. Just hope this may help others facing a similar problem. |

I tried to look for information about what this "Scan secured connections" is and I found this: https://blog.avast.com/2015/05/25/ex...nning-feature/ This is the key part: "To detect malware and threats on HTTPS sites, Avast must remove the SSL certificate and add its self-generated certificate." So they are trying to insert themselves as a Man-In-The-Middle Proxy to investigate the traffic and that does not work with our systems. Kim |

These are the reasons, I am afraid of most of the "award winning new clients".

Appreciate your concerns, mekitron, but the problem wasn’t with the email app. In this case, it was the anti-virus/web/mail security app, as kservik explained, As noted in another thread, Avast anti-virus affected Apple Mail in another way preventing it from displaying a Runbox INBOX [although all other folders appeared normally].
If anything, we should maybe be looking more closely at Avast though I have no comparison as to whether other security apps have similar problems. The IPv6 part I somewhat understand as the standard has not been widely implemented and my ISP does not support it. The "man in the middle" substitute SSl certificate is beyond my level of understanding; whether it's a problem or just an inconsistency. |
