Another issue deserving some thoughts
Quote:
As I was going to St. IVES,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?:

You put on your good VEST and went there, but there's no indication that those others were heading in the same direction. I'm guessing that you met that group walking the other way on the road who picked up all that loot in town.

1 man = 1
7 wives = 7
7 wives x 7 sacks = 49 sacks
49 sacks x 7 cats = 343 cats
343 cats x 7 = 2,401 kits

A total of 2,801 were going to St. Ives.

Beware the IDES of March! <-- Now considered deleted... but it was a good one...

Lest I fail to respond to this important thread, I will merely add that the St Ives conundrum bothered me immensely, when I was just a few years old. I am still trying to figure it out!

I will be a PEST and repeat my assertion that the man with seven wives was probably going in the opposite direction, and so not going to St Ives.
