Folder Tree Question
This is probably another obvious question to some of you.
How do I easily change the order of folders in my folder tree? I can't see the wood for the trees! Malc |

Don't think you can. After the default folders (inbox, trash, sent etc) the folders are in alpha order. Some folders I don't want to see that often so I prefix them with z. Alternatively the folders I want to see more often I prefix them with 1 Edward |

Edward, using subfolders may be better for that (place a '.' in the folder name to create subfolders; then click the '-' in the folder tree to close subfolders you don't need to use often).

Also, would the sub-folders be visable in the tree by default? Malc |

Thank you Robinson. I have just set up a couple of Inbox sub-folders. I assume that they will stay in the 'visable' or 'non-visable' mode depending on how you left them last?

Yes you are right - it is better for many purposes and I do use sub-folders a lot. Generally I group things (similar subjects, same friends etc) into subfolders and use top level folders (inbox.top_level) for unrelated stuff. I once played around with some sub-sub-sub-sub folder stuff and sent an email with a similar sub-sub-sub-sub address to ssss AT myusername.sent.com As expected the email duly arrived at the correct sub .... folder. LOL But I was just playing around. I can't see much use for such deep folders. One level down is mostly sufficient. Anyway I digress. It sure would be nice if user could reorder their folders in the way they want - say by using a 1,2,3, mechanism like we have for rules. Obviously having alpha ordering as a default. Edward |

For those who may be reading these posts, and use Outlook Express (and maybe some other clients), I would avoid making subfolders in your inbox folder. OE doesn't deal with this very well.

is flawed in and of itself. A powerful keyword/search system would be far more flexible. Alas fastmail totally lacks the first, so you're condemned to folders. It also lacks a way of searching through all folders, or a selection of folders, with a single search command, so you get bit on that side too. Fred Hapgood |
