Before I read that news report, I thought 'flies' referred to the number of persons allowed inside wearing trousers, but now see that it's the NAME of an insect.

Thermoelectrically Pumped Light-Emitting Diodes Operating above Unity Efficiency
The "efficiency" here is electrical input to optical output. It acts as a heat pump so the laws of thermodynamics are not violated. And the light output must be very small. In the experiment it is only 69 picowatts, so 15 billion (US, 15,000,000,000) would be required to add up to one watt!
