It's certainly an improvement on what it used to be. I have started using my account again. You can even select a different 'from address' now.

Hope they don't eliminate the "user@msn.com" version.

If Microsft were to change "POP3" to "IMAP" they might be on to something.... even if you live in a "microsoft world" you have all the tools to allow their products to access the email, contacts and calendars... in some cases I could use imap access. Even though in those cases POP could work though... I'd like to see imap... and better email filters!!! |

Some good info:
If you want to start using it now, there are some details you should be aware of: POP server: pop3.live.com POP SSL required? Yes User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live SMTP server: smtp.live.com Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password) TLS/SSL required? Yes. http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/new...-us-brazil.ars |

Thanks theog for the pop info for Hotmail, it works like a charm and is simple enough for novices like myself to setup. I now can pop mail into Hotmail. Also can pop mail out of Hotmail with my email client.

Works in opera M2 mail client for me doing pop3. I sent from ymail.com to hotmail.com and it got instantly delivered and downloaded.
Jay! Happy. That could mean me could use hotmail in my mobile mail client and that would make it much more easy to contact those who use hotmail. |

POP3 for free in Hotmail? Improvement for many for sure, not immediately for me as I prefer webmail anyway.
For me an improvement would be: more storage (but seems they fulfilled that wish), getting rid of the ridiculous "account frozen when not signed in for 30 days" rule, and re-open registrations with the msn.com domain which is just a bit more professional than the silly hotmail.com domain (sounds teenage esque slang to me really) I will never be a fan of Hotmail, but they have one benefit in common with Gmail and Yahoo: all are backed by very rich and powerful corporations, so the chance that Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo will outlive any other email service is very big. If you sign up for for example a new service like in.com it is questionnable if they will still be around in 5 years. With Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail you just know your email address in 15 years will still be the same, unless the internet itself would totally turn into a new format. But in the present day internet format, I see these three providers be around for... basically for as long as the internet exists in its current format. Only other providers that may have that same stability in terms of continuity may be powerful local providers such as gmx.de, web.de, seznam.cz, mail.ru, walla.co.il, ... But other than the fact that I feel secure that Hotmail will be around for many more years, I am not a big fan. Their interface is not as nice as the Yahoo and Gmail one IMO. |
