possible meaning of error message
About three weeks ago I sent two short messages that did not bounce (though I received no reply).
Today I sent a follow-up, and received the following: _______________________________________________________ Remote Server returned '550 5.5.0 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable. _______________________________________________________ Does this by any chance mean that I have been blocked or blacklisted by the recipient of the messages of several weeks ago? |

No, a 550 means that the email address doesn't exist, well that mailbox doesn't exist.

But, according to RFC 5429 - which you can read at: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5429 - which describes how servers that use Sieve and choose to implement SMTP-level rejection of mails operate - such servers should then issue a 550 response code. It says: 2.1.1. Rejecting a Message at the SMTP/LMTP Protocol Level Sieve implementations that are able to reject messages at the SMTP/ LMTP level MUST do so and SHOULD use the 550 response code. In other words, the 550 response can be used intentionally to reject mails (which have been analysed via Sieve) without giving away too much information about why they were not accepted. |

If the mailbox didn't exist you'd probably get some sort of
550 5.1.X error. 550 5.5.0 is a generic "none of the above" error. |
