Potsdam, Germany

Is the capital of the state of Brandenburg and is located on the Havel River, about seven miles southwest of Berlin. As of 1997, it had a population of 138,268.

As a city, Potsdam has existed since the 13th century. From 1660, Potsdam gained renown as residence of the Prince Electors of Brandenburg. The actual development of Potsdam into a royal residence began in 1713. Potsdam is famous for its churches, notably, the Church of St. Nicholas, Holy Ghost Church and the Garrison Church.

Potsdam owes its expansion as prestigious residence of the Hohenzollern monarchs to Frederick the Great. The creations of his reign still define the character of the city. The world-renowned Sanssouci Palace and Park were built during his reign. Other attractions include the New Palace, architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Charlottenhof Palace and the Chinese Tea House.

UNESCO has declared the Cecilienhof Palace, with its memorial to the Potsdam Conference (July 17 to August 2, 1945), as a historical monument. Potsdam is also home of the Institute for Climate Impact Research.

The Hanseatic City of Rostock is located on the Baltic Coast in the lander (province) of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Rostock has a total population of 500,000 and is home to northern Europe's oldest university, which was founded in 1419.

Rostock was founded in 1200 by German merchants and received its town charter in 1218 by Prince Borwin I. The city was almost destroyed by a major fire in 1677.

Rostock regained its importance as a major shipping center toward the end of the nineteenth century. Today, the city is an important grain export harbor and is a major industrial center in northeastern Germany.

Rostock is famous for its zoo, parks, churches, notably, the Mariankirche (St. Mary's Church) and Rathaus (townhall). The city is also home to some of northern Europe's most impressive Baroque and Danish Renaissance architecture.

Skagway, Alaska, USA

In 1897-1898, Skagway was the gateway over the White Pass to the Klondike gold fields of the Yukon Territory in Canada. Back then, the only inhabitants of this "town" was a family headed by a former riverboat captain, William Moore. Captain Moore was astute enough to foresee the possibilities that the 160 acres of land he secured in 1887 might make a very good profit if the promise of the Klondike gold fields held true. Besides his own cabin, he and his son built a wharf to handle the ship traffic that would surely come.

The ones who came, though, took over his homestead and renamed the town from Mooresville to Skaguay, after the Tlingit word, "skaqua," which means windy place. By 1898, after the post office was established, the town's name changed to its present spelling and the population boomed to 10,000-20,000.

Today, the population of the town is several hundred, rising to several thousand each day as the cruise ships pull into port. Besides by sea on the Alaska Marine Highway ships also, you can get to Skagway by air via Juneau, and by car on the Alaska Highway, popularly known as the Alcan, through British Columbia and the Yukon from the lower 48 states.

Things to do include hiking/backpacking the same grueling trail the stampeders took up the White Pass trail, taking the White Pass and Yukon Railway up the same way to Lake Bennett in the Yukon, visiting the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, flightseeing, and sportfishing. Shopping and dining is pretty good, too.

Utopia Texas - Spanish exploration into the area is responsible for many of the area's topographical features. In 1790 Juan de Ugalde (namesake of Uvalde) led united tribes of Comanche, Taovaya, and Tawakoni Indians to drive the Apaches from what is now Utopia.

Venice, Italy

One of the most exotic towns out there: with narrow alleys and watercanals, and all kinds of boats you can think of. The #1 place for the child tourist. The place were I paid about 85 euros for a taxi from the airport into town, and it was worth it (entering Venice at nighttime on boat).

Aachen, Germany. When I was a teenager I met a girl from there. That was a long time ago, but not so long compared to the town's history...
