Google lumping apps together

Not a fan of this development. I would rather pick and choose the apps I want to use, and not have them integrated. Will inevitably cause problems. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020...meet-and-chat/

From the quoted website:

this is only for G Suite and not consumer versions of Gmail.
So I'm not affected.

There is a quote in the article that they are looking at moving some of these features down to consumer Gmail eventually. But, with Google you never know! They often say one thing, and do another.

G Suite is now Workspace (not Workplace) indicating the new merging of everything into one blob. And, you may be losing your unlimited storage. https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/1...ith-workspace/

I just checked my Gmail App.

Strange, I though Calendar and Contacts was part of Gmail. It's not. Tapping those options takes me to the Google Play Store. I am pretty sure I remember having to turn this stuff off before. Maybe I am thinking of Outlook or Yahoo. They have fairly recently added Google Meet to Gmail for video calling. The was no opt out of it.

On your phone the apps are still separate, as far as I know. There is a new link to Meet at the bottom of your Gmail Inbox, which may be useful to some people but not to me. Calendar and Contacts are installed by default on my Pixel 4a, but not sure what other Android companies do with their phones. The whole Workspace thing is for paid business accounts, but I don't know if they plan on creating a new app for that.

You can disable the gmail/meet/chat bar in settings under the account.

Android devices are required to ship the core google apps or none at all (ASOP). On my older phones you could not disable the core apps, on my new Moto G8 you can disable everything except settings/phone/messages.
