And Windows 8 as well. Blimey.
Yes, the exact message is something like "this file is not commonly downloaded so it could pose some risk". I'm afraid this is a catch-22 / chicken-and-the-egg problem so this won't disappear until many people download it! :-(

This is typical of seldom-downloaded files. I also received both messages. Not a particularly big deal, and I am sure most downloaders will understand why.

I've managed to re-gain access to the fastcheck.org admin panel (there was an indirect loop created by the theme it was using and the host company support fixed the issue in just a few minutes after I opened the ticket!).

So I've added a news on the home page and info about the new release. This should automatically send notifications to people who have the "notify about new version" toggled on.

I should really completely redo fastcheck.org - I can't believe FastCheck is already 12 years old and the internet looked completely different back then!

Works now flawlessly for me!
So good to have it back!
Thank you so much, Eric

hi Eric, i was thrilled to read at fastcheck.org that there is a new fastcheck. i have used it for so many years & loved it. for some reason, though, when downloaded & tried to use the new fastcheck, i get an error message that "fastcheck.exe is not a valid Win32 application". i have tried downloading & using all 3, but got the same message each time. could it be because i still use xp?? any input or ideas you could suggest would be so greatly appreciated ... thank you, in advance ...

Many thanks to Eric for fixing this officially, so we don't have to resort to cludges any more! Everything is looking good, except maybe that for me personally, the older blue-on-green check mark and black-on-yellow message notification icons were somewhat more attention-grabbing than the new version's. I guess I'll have to get used to it.

Until Eric gets around to recompiling, if you know how to use a hex editor, you can fix this problem yourself by changing these two locations in FastCheck.exe:

(hex) offset 00000158 from 06 to 04
(hex) offset 00000160 from 06 to 04

Newer MS developer tools target Vista/7/8 (Windows numeric version 6.x), this lets you use the program on NT4 (4.x) and 2000/XP (5.x), which otherwise think that an executable saying it works with OS version 6 is invalid, even if there's nothing in it that actually wouldn't work on those systems.

Same here.
Maybe there could be an option to get back the old notification icons?

Impatient that I am, I went ahead and used Resource Hacker to replace the relevant icons (icon groups 2100-2137) with those from the old version. All is good now.

walpurg,
Could you please explain in detail what you did to get back the icons from the old version?
Thank you!

  • Download Resource Hacker and install it.
  • Make a new folder somewhere.
Copy the old Version 2.3.0.0 FastCheck.exe into this folder and rename it to FastCheck_old.exe.
Copy the new Version 3.0.1.0 FastCheck.exe into this folder.
Save the script down below in a text file named replace.txt in this folder.
  • (The reason we're using the command line here is that making all these icon changes in the GUI one by one is rather tedious.)
Open a command prompt in this folder.
Execute in the command prompt (change the program path according to your installation; don't miss the two commas at the end, they are required)
    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\Resource Hacker\ResHacker.exe" -extract FastCheck_old.exe, icons.res, ICONGROUP,,
    Verify that icons.res was created.
    Execute in the command prompt
    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\Resource Hacker\ResHacker.exe" -script replace.txt
Verify that FastCheck_fixed.exe was created and check FastCheck.log for any errors.
If you like, open FastCheck_fixed.exe in the ResHacker GUI and double check that the icons in Icon Groups 2100-2137 look OK.
  • If you have FastCheck running, exit the program (or you won't be able to replace the executable).
Make a backup of the FastCheck.exe in the FastCheck installation folder, then delete it from there.
Copy FastCheck_fixed.exe over to the installation folder and rename it to FastCheck.exe.
  • Run the new FastCheck.exe.
Your security program may pop up a notification about a modified executable, tell it not to worry. (In some cases you may have to close and relaunch FastCheck after that, because its Internet connection gets blocked before you get prompted.)
Delete the working folder you created before.
  • Profit
