You don't have to pay the $1 at http://www.cyberspace.org/ . They block some ports, so you'll need to use imap.proxy.fastmail.fm on an unblocked port to use their system.

Mutt (like Pine) is only useful if you have a permanent internet connection. It doesn't support disconnected mode like Mulberry, Outlook Express, Mozilla, etc., so you can't use it while not connected to the Internet.

I was using mutt even when I was on a dialup connection (== until summer 2001).
Of course I didn't run it on my home machine - I logged in to the server when the mail was stored. -- Kirill |

I asked about the shell access before I signed up, and Jeremy said it's not popular enough + you can get an account at freeshell.
I'm still interested in a well-maintained, secure (I'm most interested in one-time passwords for those times when you log in from an untrusted terminal) shell box for reading email, though, and freeshell/cyberspace don't cut it for me. I was going to set up something for myself, but if more people are interested then maybe it would make more sense if I'll build it as a public service, so if you're interested please drop me a line at ppetru@ppetru.net. |

Problems with SSL Imap from freeshell
I took the advice and now have an account on: otaku.freeshell.org
Freeshell is running Pine 4.33 I can connect to my mail on fastmail fine at: {www.fastmail.fm/user=USERID}inbox when I try to use SSL ie. {www.fastmail.fm/user=USERID/ssl}inbox I get an error..."[self signed certificate in certificate chain: /C=ZA /SR=Western Cape ..." "Can't establish SSL connection" Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Here's a message I sent to webmaster@fastmail.fm a month ago:
My Pine kept complaining about a self-signed certificate (not the "hostname mismatch" thing, I'm using www.fastmail.fm as the IMAP server). Eventually, I figured out that this is because it doesn't have Thawte's root certificate to validate against (I guess something's wrong with my SSL instalation, or something like that). I got the root certificate from here: http://www.openssl.org/source/cvs/ex...1&sortbydate=0 then I put it where Pine was looking for it (/usr/lib/ssl/cert.pem in my case, usually it's something like /usr/local/ssl/cert I think) and now it works. Just thought you may be interested in adding this to your Pine setup page, in case someone else runs into the same problem. |
