This was meant to be a joke .... Rest assured, your position as the EMD person with the largest phone remains unchallenged

You can also avoid in android a gmail account and disable all google services (as I am doing with my mobile phone and tablet) but you must download the apk,s from a different place (as f-droid for example) or manually, or getting them from a friend or from reliable places (analyse them with some antivirus and antimalware).
If you can it´s better to install cyanogen, but not always is possible.
Use firefox for browsing, but disable tracking and all the information they send to some servers (A good example: http://unspyable.com/browser_spying.htm).

Thank you once again. I plan on phasing out my old Blackberry, this year sometime. Likely I will purchase a decent (used) Android Smartphone. When travelling I currently use my phone for email mostly (in conjunction with my Runbox account and a global SIM card) - what do you recommend...

I never use my own IP when I browse internet, that´s something you must consider to avoid attacks, expose your location, etc...
But if you don´t mind to expose your IP/location then you can use Firefox to read your RB´s email with webmail.
Everyone has different preferences in privacy and security and I don´t know yours.

BlackBerry Passport. Period.

Most smartphones support VPN, including the BlackBerry Passport.

Hence, my recommendation for the Passport. Coupled with BES12, there is no mobile device platform more private and secure. That is not to say BlackBerry devices are bulletproof, only that they represent the best in secure communications available to the layperson today. IMO, why tout the benefits of Runbox and other secure mail providers if your platform is running leaky Android or iOS? If you have the means, the addition of SecuSUITE for BlackBerry 10 will set your communications at privacy and security levels used by global heads of states. The drawback is that all parties must be secured via Secusmart.

That´s what I mean. And in some circunstances using firstly VPN and above the VPN: Orbot + Orweb.
But google and other services must be disabled first.

As an alternative to webmail, K-9 is a feature-packed, free & open-source mail app for Android that supports any IMAP account, including Runbox.

That's not good enough. Use Navajo talkers at both ends.

It´s very good because your ISP doesn´t know that you are connecting to Tor, only your VPN if it´s reliable (of course you can also use bridges). Then your connection goes to Tor without showing your IP and protecting you from bugs in Tor and surveillance in it, if someone inside Tor (an exit node) wants to monitor your IP it will only see the IP of the VPN.
