For the past day many remote servers have been uncontactable from FastMail's XMPP server due to many remote servers now enforcing encrypted server connections, which we didn't support. A server update has just been pushed out and connects to remote servers are now working again.

I just tried and it is working. But that is an old Google apps account and if I remember correctly Google does not support XMPP anymore with the new Hangouts. But I am not completely sure about that.

Sadly Google no longer supports cross-network federation through XMPP. So your fast mail xmpp account cannot message Google Hangouts users.

Google currently supports XMPP to conned to the @gmail.com Google Talk network and have one-to-one Hangouts to Talk conversations. It's a huge mess, extremely shortsighted of Google, and all around terrible news for user freedom and open standards. But what can you do, Google is the power player in the market right now.

In the long run you will probably not be able to use ANY XMPP to connect to Google as Talk is done away with and everyone forced into Google Hangouts (aka Google+ ). Sad.
