oddpost
Anyone have experience (subscribed users) with oddpost.com?? Just read a wired.com article about them...pretty interesting!
DHTML web-based email - "desktop-like" application interface. Nice idea, but how's the service/up-time, email speed, features? I've signed up for a trial, and it's "pretty" - that's for sure...but in terms of service I wonder how they'll measure up? |

I also took a look at their service. The interface is really neat, but, I prefer my Mulberry e-mail client instead. I wrote them an e-mail and asked them a few questions. I will be staying with FastMail, but, it was interesting to see what other people are doing. Anyway, they seem like nice quys. Here is the e-mail they sent back to me:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey Gerry, Thanks so much for the message. Let me answer your questions inline: 1. Can I use an external e-mail client to access my messages? Yep, you can use POP or IMAP, and the server name is simply "oddpost.com" -- I'll add this to the faq. 2. Can you host my MX record for my own domain? Not yet, but we've gotten a few requests for this, so stay tuned. 3. How secure is OddPost when accessing your mail from another person's PC or a kiosk overseas? As secure/insecure as the browser itself, I suppose. Note that we don't send your password back and forth in plaintext. It's encrypted. 4. What is my bandwidth limit per month? No bandwidth limits (yet). Just storage limits (30 megs). 5. Do you do an sort of blocking[of e-mail from] Open Relays? Not sure what this means. I'll ask Iain. 6. Do you scan for viruses on incoming e-mails? Not yet, looking into it though. Sorry the answer to all your questions wasn't YES. We're working on this as fast as we can. Really appreciate you checking out the site! Hi
I hope no one minds me bumping an old post but the thread title caught me eye. I have been using Oddpost for nearly a year now and I am completely satisfied. Many things have changed since the last post was made to this thread, probably most notably the quota is now 50mb and a new spam filter is in use. MAILfreak |

Are they still IE support only? I'm afraid my "religious" persuasion was the main reason for not signing after the trial period.

As far as I know they still only support Internet Explorer 5.5 or later. I'm not sure if they have any plans for supporting other browsers, but I'm sure an email to support woudn't come a miss.

Still..
They still use IE only. If you don't have IE, you are redirected to a generic site to check your mail. If you have IE, they are reliable. I had an account for nearly a year and had no problems. I think they are a bit pricey, though.

On the contrary, you get quite a lot for what you pay for. I think, in terms of features for the price, it's more or less the same as Runbox and FM. Have you compared it to services like Another.com and BiteMe? The latter is extortionate - their alleged "Power" account offers 25mb of storage (HALF the amount Oddpost gives you) plus some other standard features thrown in (which you can get for FREE with Lycos Mail) for $100 US! Ouch!

Well...IMO Oddpost is value for money.
It appears that the BiteMe site is down at the moment so I can't compare prices. Either that or my ignorance has caused me to get the URL wrong. |

I tried Oddpost a few weeks ago and must say I really liked using the web interface. Probably because I used Outlook at work for many years, and it was familiar. A feature I really liked was the ability to 'drag and drop' emails around between mailboxes, using the mouse. But, I use a Mac Powerbook as well as a PC; so, if they make this service available to people who are using IE on a Mac, I will consider using them in the future --david

Actually it's dead easy to check your email if you aren;t using a compatible computer all the time. Just enter your email address and password into Mail2Web and hey presto!
Another thing I forgot to point out was, with them being a fairly small company at the moment there are loads of good usernames up for grabs. I was able to get my first name as my username! |
