It also decreases membership; many will choose to not post at all if they know that their post will not be immediately displayed. This decreases profit margins (from ad's) for the site owner.

That's not true.

You're not moderating the member or making it harder for them to join, just moderating their first post (or more) after they have actually posted it.

A new member has no way of knowing their first post won't display immediately.

Ray does speak with considerable experience with regard to forum management, of course.

I agree with moderating first posts before publishing them - that would get rid of 99 per cent of the spam at a stroke.

But looking at it from the point of view of the new genuine poster, they might not understand that their post is not showing - it should be made clear to them at the point that they sign up.

If someone has a genuine question, we will welcome them with open arms.

I agree with David. How long would the user have to wait for the post to appear before they give up?

Also it's a murder for the moderators to go through the postings.

Speaking as a moderator on 2 forums myself, why can't EMD install the link-detector plug in, so any newbies that post links will get sent to the moderator queue? It seems a lot less hassle.

It's worth noting I chase their first post with a notice that displays at the top of the page when a new member is in the "moderation zone" so after posting they are made away why it did not show up right away.. I'm also a nice guy a stop displaying almost all my adsense once a visitor registers. If you want to see it all in action try registering at EQ and doing your first thread or reply

Just wondering if there's any way to report spam, without opening the obvious spam message?

BTW, if I had 2 "bricksbaby", your eyes would be watering, etc.

I've always wondered why we have to wait 60 seconds between reporting spam post. There nothing dangerous in bricksbaby's spam postings.

Sorry I didn't claim that beer.

Thoroughly enjoyed Manchester though. Cricket, eating, drinking but the highlight was probably your fantastic, free museums especially MOSI.

Ran out of time and will have to come back someday.

I considered wishing psalzer (moderator) a happy birthday, but as she has not posted here on the forum for over 9 years she probably will never read this.
