Is Gmail irreplaceable?

Yeh, I'm another "doomed by gmail" user, use it as primary id. I've done a reasonably good research but couldn't find a real replacement, for the feature rich web interface of Gmail.

My 1st requirement : Sent as alias, with smtp support.

Outlook/Hotmail - No
Yahoo - No
AOL - No
Mail.com/GMX - No
Mail.ru - No
Yandex - No
Zimbra - No ( I'm not totally sure).

...and all the other I've used - No, except

Zoho - Yes
Fastmail - Yes [Paid]
Runbox - Yes [Paid]
LuxSci - Yes [Paid]

My 2nd requirement : Fetch pop accounts without adding them as 'sent as' account.

Outlook add all POP accounts as alias, in case of Yahoo its more pathetic. That pop account get added as alias mail + part of yahoo account .

Please recommend me any webmail provider which fulfils it. Free preferable, because I'm just an email-enthusiast. All my primary conversations are done over phone.

Having just switched from Google Apps, my answer is "NO, Gmail definitely is not irreplaceable !

If I were you, I would at least investigate the possibility of getting your own domain. I have mine with Gandi (www.gandi.net) then look at EUMX and Runbox, who will both offer what you are looking for.

Polarismail is another good option worth a look, as is posteo.de

There are plenty of options that are just as good, if not better, than Gmail / Google Apps

It´s very professional IMHO.

Thats a great advice jeff. Actually if I'll ever use own domain, I'll most probably go with gandi.net.

Only polarismail enhance account can do this, AFAIK. Good to know that Runbox too can. But both are paid. As I'm having this on free from Gmail/Zoho, I'm not considering paying right in this moment.

Had an EuMX account. But the webmail clients was not satisfactory. And the "send as" option was may be only available on Horde.

I could not remember if Yandex can handle "sent as SMTP". I had set up one just to test long time ago but some providers considering any mails sent from Yandex as spam. Despite of its a great service, I had to let it go.

I'll definitely give Yandex another try.

Edit : Nope. Yandex Can't. Mail.ru Can't. Checked.

Both EUMX and Runbox are very cheap - My EUMX account cost me just $16 for a year.

I purchased a Runbox Mini Account, which is £34.95 year, but Runbox are currently running an offer, of two years for the price of one.

so, I have recently purchased two quality email services for a combined $50.95, less than $1 a week. Not free, but almost, and the Runbox account is paid until September 2015

The new Horde 5 interface, available through EUMX is top notch by the way, very easy to use and pleasing on the eye.

I understand jeff. I can pay, but keeping in mind the few actual emails I have to handle, that will be a total wastage.

$1 = Rs. 62 = 2 standard Lunch here.

All my primary communication is over phone/Facebook, cause I have to comply with the surrounding people I live with. Plus the job I've got appointed (Banking Sector) have restricted rule for not accessing outside office periphery..

So I'd better spend that money on other purpose. Thanks though.

There is one called Sify, from India.
(U.S.-owned, from what I understand.)

I haven't tried it; supposedly it uses the GMail platform.
(I don't know to what extent Google is otherwise involved.)

Sify uses Gmail. There is no reason to switch to it. There is a lot other Gmail based services.

LuxSci allows sending as an alias from either WebMail or SMTP as well as use of POP without "sent as" additions. The account is probably ot of your price range, but its feature set certainly meets the requirements.

Anyone using Google Apps could be considered that. Google has an ISP edition so quite a few around the world do utilize Gmail as their email provider.
