David, my Kindle DX doesn't use a wired or WiFi network connection. It uses the cellular network to load books and magazines to local memory. So you load a book or magazine or blog or personal document once through the cellular data network (with zero monthly charges, just a fee for subscriptions or a fee to transfer personal documents via the cellular network). The books or other documents then reside in the memory of the Kindle. You can also download books/documents to the Kindle over a USB cable from a PC.
There are also free PC and smartphone apps for the Kindle by Amazon.com. And, as ChinaLamb pointed out, there are lots of free old books available for the Kindle or other formats. I have installed several free books from Amazon directly. My older Kindle DX uses the Sprint PCS network. The newer US Kindle DX units use the AT&T network. There are international versions of the Kindle for other networks. Bill |

Interestingly enough, some books that Amazon charges for you can find free on other websites, like Gutenberg.
Sometimes the formatting isn't as good, but I'll take free over 5.95 any day... I have about 95 free books on my kindle. - It already paid for itself! |

Thank you to all who have responded. I will really check out the Kindle..... if I can download a book in plain text (to my computer or directly to the unit) would it be possible for the Kindle to read it I wonder.

This is one of my favourite books:
The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne IMHO, this is much better than Robinson Crusoe or Swiss Family Robinson, as the escapees arrive on the island with absolutely nothing - they survive and thrive on their skills and their wits. This is available as an audio book from LibriVox or as an eBook from Project Gutenberg. Last edited by FredOnline : 9 Aug 2021 at 04:27 PM. Reason: Spelling! |
