Firefox 2 shortcut keys

For those of you who have switched to Firefox 2, you may have noticed that some of the shortcut keys (those little underlined letters in FastMail.FM) don't work any more.

The reason is that in Firefox 2, you now must type Alt-Shift-Key, not just Alt-Key. So for example, 'Compose' is now Alt-Shift-C.

I think this is actually pretty useful - you can access the menus directly with Alt-Key, the web page shortcuts with Alt-Shift-Key, and use Find As You Type using the keys on their own.

In other Firefox 2 news: the integrated spell-checker works really well with FastMail.FM - I hadn't expected to like it much, but it's actually really effective. It shows little red underlines under mis-spelled words (like MS Word does) and adds a 'add to dictionary' entry to the right-click menu.

Heh, heh. Yep, I think $5 is a good price.

Just a note for Mac users: you can do the same with [CTRL]+[C], and so on.

In Firefox 2.0, would that be [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[KEY] now?

(I'd check myself, but I'm in front of my work PC at the moment.)

No, it's just [CTRL]+[key].

Seems like the reason I didn't dump vi for emacs. In emacs everything seemed to require longer key combinations.

Is there a list of all the keyboard shortcuts in one place? I think there are some non obvious ones, such as Ctrl-Enter to send your message.

I would love a master list of all the underlined words shortcuts and non obvious shortcuts.

Thanks.

Uhm.. With Firefox 2.0 for Windows, if you use Ctrl+Shift+Enter (instead of just Ctrl+Enter) for sending a message, it works just as well -- and you don't get that dreadful Download Manager window. Interesting!

hugoheden: I'm not sure if you're the one that updated the bugzilla entry as well, but if so, thanks. That's a neat workaround and I've added it to the blog.

That's the problem with averages.... there are an awful lot of posts early on and few recently. Try that with meals and see how things suit. So, yes, I was being a smidgen witty

Amen to that! I absolutely love the built-in Spellchecker in Firefox 2. I can't figure out how I ever did without it!
