TIR.com What happened??

I used to have an email @tir.com and now it appears as though there is not even a DNS entry for this 3 letter domain?

Scott

Welcome Scott, but don't post your full email address on the board.

Interesting when I type tir.com into a browser window I get the message "This site can’t be reached www.tir.com took too long to respond."

It appears that there is a DNS issue. I thought that SMTP relied on DNS.

I'm still confused.

A site may run a mail server, but not a web server.

Thanks for your reply, here's two more pieces of information to further the discussion.

1. When you use one of the many web based tools to "validate" an email address my email @tir.com it says it a "GOOD" email

2. When you Ping tir.com you get "Can't find host tir.com"

If Ping can't find a server, and SMTP relies on DNS to route mail how the heck does the email validating service declare it a "Good" address.

The only conclusion I can come to i that my belief that SMTP needs DNS to properly route a mail message is NOT True!!??

Any comments?

Scott

Arrow Some email domains do not provide websites

The email domain tir.com is owned by EarthLink. You can find more information for accessing email at tir.com at:
Earthlink server settings part 2 page

If a domain doesn't have a website it won't have any DNS A records. You won't be able to ping it or access it with a web browser as a website. Email delivery is controlled by DNS MX records, and for tir.com these redirect to the following email delivery server addresses at EarthLink:
onemain-mx.earthlink.net 209.86.93.121
onemain-mx.earthlink.net 209.86.93.122

The only DNS records for tir.com are those related to email. There is no website. A sending SMTP server with a message for an address at the tir.com domain looks up the DNS MX record, and this resolves to the two IP's I show above.
  • You can't ping tir.com because there are no A records published in the tir.com DNS.
  • You typically can't ping or telnet the Earthlink MX address shown above from a home connection because Earthlink blocks the connection for spam reduction purposes.

Bill - THANKS for taking the time to explain this to me I Really appreciate it!

I've been retired for about 10 years, and now that you mentioned it I have a vague memory of DNS "A" & "B" records.

Thanks again
