Umail is closing at the end of the month

I just found this at the Umail.net site --

----------------------------------------------------------
Umail is closing!

It is with big regret that we inform you that the Umail.net email service is being discontinued.
Unfortunately, the current status of the project doesn’t allow us to continue any further.

The Umail service, accessible at http://umail.net, and all related services (like POP3/SMPT servers) will be taken offline on 01/01/2013. After such date, all the data in the system will be permanently deleted.

Please make sure that you have downloaded all of the messages you may want to save and redirected your email addresses to some other service before that date, as we won’t be able to recover it after taking the system offline.

Starting from now, it won’t be possible to create new Umail accounts. Existing accounts will continue to function normally till the indicated date.
Thank you very much for being part of our project. I hope you enjoyed using our services as much as we enjoyed providing them to you, but please accept my most sincere apologies if we are causing you or your business any trouble.

If you need help, you can reach us as support@umail.net, as usual.

Thank you, and best regards.

Administration of Umail.net

Did that mail.ua service survive the hands of time? That was a Ukrainian provider too, although I believe they relied on EveryoneNet infrastructure.

EDIT: yes it is, and it even has an English sign-up page. It is merging with Mail.ru, which may make this one less interesting for some though.

Good old mail.mn is still around but they seem to use Gmail infrastructure Back in the old days they had a totally independent system.

I feel for them such must feel sad indeed.
Wanting success and realizing the competition too hard.

May I trust it is the success of FaceBook that makes too few
motivated to pay ads for less popular small services?

With current Gmail's offering, NOT having any other business model ( in short, portal), only leads to this fate of small free email services.

In the former USSR, Vkontakte is by far more popular than Facebook. Of course with the same consequences. I wonder how services like Safe Mail, EUMX, Contact Office, etc survive the competition of the big players, although I am happy they do. The last thing we need is that the surviving "small" ones all surrender and force anyone to join one of the big players.

Unhappy Umail.net

Unfortunately, often when a free email service is listed here, even one that has been around for some time; it folds because of increased signups that the system cannot handle and the administrators do not want to spend more time and money to host.

It is conceivable that you may be correct in some hypothetical case, although the math doesn't readily compute. EMD has some twenty thousand members, of whom only a small percentage make up the subset of those who are likely to sign up for a service just because it is mentioned here. It is difficult to imagine that so many members of a relatively small subset of EMD would join a service all at once, to the point of actually overwhelming it. No doubt many of us do indeed sign up for services mentioned at EMD in order to test them (and also because some members are also avid "collectors"), but not enough to cause a service to fold! In any case, the message from Umail announcing their closure did not indicate that excessive demand played any part in their decision not to continue.

As of January 2, 2013, Umail.net is still up

Umail.net was supposed to close yesterday, but the service is still up. Perhaps whoever was going to turn out the lights is still hungover from his New Year's celebration! (Or maybe they changed their minds? The hangover is more likely, unfortunately.)

Dead service walking?

As of today, Umail.net is still up and functional. Messages to support asking when the site will actually be taken down are not answered. This is strange. I don't suppose they have changed their minds about closing the service, but I wonder what is going on.

This reminds me of the Monty Python "Dead Parrot Sketch":

"is no more", "has ceased to be", "bereft of life, it rests in peace"

Sorry for your loss.
