Hi everyone!

Just bought an external hard drive case for my HD a couple of days ago. I was trying to set up Thunderbird on one of the partitions (wanting it to be portable and all) and when I was setting up my old profile in the new one (which is located in the ext. HD as well), it froze. I had to turn off the HD thinking it would be ok. Bad move

When I reconnected my ext. HD again, that partition is now gone.. I mean it's still there but it now gives me a "The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable" message.

This is the first time I'm dealing with data loss and on an external hard drive. I've tried searching online for solutions and I just keep getting links to hard drive recovery experts.

Anyone knows how I can do this? Or what free software I can use to save this partition?

Now I'm afraid to run any sort of programs on my ext. hard drive.. I think I just better use it strictly as a storage device.

Have you tried hooking it up as a slave drive and scanning for errors on the disk?? (You may be able to repair the damage)

Slave drive? You mean hooking it up in the PC itself?

OK...You can boot to the drive just NOT THAT PARTITION right??

If this is the case,you can simply run SCAN DISK on the drive and it hopefully will fix any errors.

Your disk is corrupted but it MAY BE RECOVERABLE by using scan disk (Which fix's alot of errors) Im assuming you only have trouble getting to the one partition which has become corrupted.. Hopefully scan disk will correct that (Or there are other disk tools out there which do an even better job)

Bamb0, yes you're correct. I can boot up the drive just not that partition. I'll do try running scan disk on it.

I used TestDisk and since I didn't know much about running it, started an email correspondence with the author.
I got it fixed in less than an hour.

I thought I had to bring it in for a $250 fee *phew*.

That's good news. I must admit that when I read you first email that I doubted very much you would get your data back - it looks like a good job was done by all who participated in the thread
