Thanks Terry for your response. I was hoping there would be provisions for typing a certain spam address that would block it at all times I get one that comes about once per week

You can do that with a rule. Just go to Settings > Rules and set up what you want. You can choose to permanently delete messages from the bad address, move them to the spam folder, or whatever you want.

If you don't want to go through the settings screen, you can also open one of the spam messages, click the MORE button in the message, and select "Add Rule From Message," which streamlines the whole process a little.

A spammer that doesn't vary their email address? Odd? Most do. But whatever works.

That's definitely true for traditional types of spam -- the kind that offers to sell you prescription drugs, make you rich, or enlarge certain body parts. In those cases, I've found that filtering on keywords ("Has Cialis in the Subject Line") is more effective than trying to block an address.

But there are other kinds of "spam." Over the years, I've gotten on more than a few lists for genuine but unwanted mail -- newsletters, retail offers, and so forth. Sometimes they are impossible to escape by merely unsubscribing. In those cases, setting a rule to just delete messages from those addresses has worked very well.

If you're not skilful with rules then for goodness sake don't try a delete rule at first. Create a new folder for experiments and have your rule move emails to that folder. Review what gets put in the folder and only when you're sure the rule is only processing the right things, change the action to a delete.

Personally I NEVER automatically delete things. You need to remember that a rule that seems to be working fine now might delete genuine mail next month or next year, if you have written the rule tests too vaguely, and new mails start arriving in due course and accidentally match your existing rules.
